Over the past several years, General Motors like its Detroit counterparts at Ford and Stellantis has largely abandoned the traditional car market in favor of crossovers, SUVs and pickups. However, it has persisted with sedans for its premium Cadillac brand and is even about to launch a flagship electric sedan with the Celestiq. While the hand-built Celestiq has a starting price of $340,000, Cadillac has hinted it will have other electric sedans in the coming years. However, before those arrive the current midsize CT5 is getting a refresh for the 2025 model year.
The CT5 and its smaller sibling, the CT4 aren’t huge sellers by any means, but they both experienced a notable upswing in sales in 2023 as inventories have recovered. Sales so far this year are up 35.6% and the CT5 has its best segment market share since 2016.
When it goes on sale in spring 2024, the revamped CT5 will get a new front fascia with subtly changed appearance. It will still be recognizable as a CT5, but the grille is getting a bit wider and the lights have been reworked to bring them a bit more in line with the look of Cadillacs EVs. The headlamps have been brought down into a square segment nestled into the corner of the running lamps.
The horizontal segment of the running lamps is now slimmer with the headlamps removed, flowing up into the fender edge and then down the front corners. The body colored area around the grille has been reshaped to look more like the current V-series model giving all CT5s a more aggressive look.
The more substantive changes are in the cabin which now looks much more like the Lyriq electric crossover. The previously separate instrument cluster and central infotainment screen are now combined into a curved sheet of glass. Like the Lyriq there is a smaller touch sensitive area to the left to allow the driver to change some modes and the larger 17-inch infotainment to the right.
The new screen will feature the same new Android Automotive based infotainment that GM has been rolling out across other new models for the past two years. It includes Google Automotive Services with Maps, Assistant and the Play store for downloading more vehicle compatible apps. Unlike the GM’s EVs, the CT5 will retain support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto, both with wireless connectivity.
Downloading apps and other data will also be quicker as the OnStar system now has a 5G modem. Super Cruise hands-off driving assist will continue to be available and the driver monitor system that is part of it will also enable driver attention assist. The updated CT5 will also have hands-on lane keeping assist to fill the gap between adaptive cruise control and Super Cruise. This should help to address one of the complaints that Consumer Reports had in its early 2023 evaluation of driver assistance systems with GM lacking this intermediate mode when driving on roads where Super Cruise is not available.
Under the skin, the CT5 powertrains are carried over with the choice of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 for the sport and premium luxury trim levels. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a choice of rear or all-wheel drive. Cadillac will be sharing more on the V-series and Blackwing models as well as pricing at a later date.
It’s good to see that Cadillac still sees value in offering sedans as part of its lineup even as its chief competitor at Lincoln has given up on this form factor in North America. While most buyers today are opting for crossovers, not everyone wants those taller, heavier machines.
