Air New Zealand has finally disclosed the estimated cost of booking an economy-class sleeper pod on a long-haul flight: $400-$600 New Zealand dollars ($250-$380), in addition to the seat price.
Passengers are limited to one pod session per flight, which means they will have to spend the rest of the journey in the cramped coach seating.
The airline unveiled its “Skynest” pods a few years ago but had not revealed the pricing details until now.
These pods, believed to be the first of their kind for economy flight passengers, will be available on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes for its New York City and Chicago routes, starting in September 2024.
Each pod will make up a six-pod zone and will provide passengers with a full-size pillow, sheets and a blanket, earplugs, a reading light, a USB outlet, a ventilation outlet, and comfortable lighting designed to promote relaxation.
The pods will also come with a seatbelt to ensure passenger safety and security in case of turbulence during the flight.
Air New Zealand has stated that the bedding will be changed after each booking, and as each pod session concludes, the lights will gradually brighten to help passengers wake up. However, if a passenger remains asleep past their allocated time, a crew member will politely wake them up, according to the airline.
“With our ultra-long haul routes to destinations such as New York and Chicago, Skynest offers our passengers a unique and innovative way to rest and recharge, enhancing their overall journey experience with us,” said Air New Zealand in a press release posted on their website. “By introducing Skynest on these routes, we are fulfilling our commitment to provide choices and the best possible experience for our passengers, while continuing to lead and innovate in the aviation industry.”
