Apple’s longstanding iTunes Movie Trailers app for iOS may not be around for much longer, according to a report by MacRumors. The app, known for allowing users to watch film trailers, previews, and find movie theater showtimes, is expected to wind down soon. However, Apple is not exiting the trailer screening business entirely. Instead, it appears that trailers will be integrated into the Apple TV app, as indicated by a new banner displayed in the Trailers app.
The banner at the top of the Movie Trailers app, as well as the classic iTunes Movie Trailers website, states, “Apple TV app is the new home of iTunes Movie Trailers.” The appearance of this banner, first noticed on August 9th, confirms the transition.
If you’re still interested in accessing trailers, The Verge discovered a new “Movie and TV Trailers” section tucked away in the Store menu of the Apple TV app. However, it may require some scrolling to find the Movie and TV Trailers icon.
Interestingly, the classic Movie Trailers app is still accessible on Apple TV and displays the same banner. This suggests that both apps may not be available for much longer.
The iTunes Movie Trailers app has shown signs of aging, with outdated software design elements. In dark mode, some headers are barely legible. Originally launched in 2011, the app was based on Apple’s Quicktime Movie Trailers website from the Y2K era. This website served as a platform for watching high-quality trailers before YouTube made browser-based video playback more accessible.
Personally, I used to rely on this app for movie showtimes, but it seems that feature no longer functions properly. The app fails to display all the films available at my local theater. Furthermore, when selecting a movie like Barbie in the new Apple TV Trailers experience, it directs users to a preorder screen where payment of $24.99 is required, without any showtime options for local theaters. Therefore, it is unlikely that the old movie showtimes feature will continue in this new version.
