Since the release of the movie Barbie, babynames.com has experienced a significant surge in searches for the names ‘Barbie’ and ‘Ken.’
Babynames.com is a highly popular website for exploring potential baby names. It not only provides name suggestions but also offers data on name popularity over time, meanings of names, and even lists songs associated with specific names.
According to babynames.com, there has been a 300 percent increase in searches for ‘Barbie’ and a 200 percent increase in searches for ‘Ken.’ This spike in interest could be indicative of a growing trend among parents considering these names for their future children. Additionally, it could also be driven by fans seeking information on the names’ historical popularity.
In the movie, it is mentioned that ‘Barbie’ was named after Ruth Handler’s own daughter, Barbra. Similarly, ‘Ken’ derived its name from Handler’s son, Kenneth.
Data on names assigned to individuals at birth is collected by Statistics Canada and the Social Security Administration in the United States. While Statistics Canada does not specifically collect information on individuals named ‘Barbie,’ it does capture data on names such as ‘Barbara,’ ‘Ken,’ and ‘Kenneth.’ The popularity of all three names has seen a decline over time.
Out of the three names, ‘Ken’ has consistently been the least popular, representing only more than 0.02% of baby boys in a single year, specifically 1994. After all, he’s just Ken.
The cultural impact of the Barbie movie goes beyond the increased interest in the names. It has also led to significant financial success for Cineplex on its opening weekend, thanks to the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon. Interestingly, it was later revealed that Cineplex had quietly raised ticket prices for these two movies. Moreover, there has been a surge in the purchase of pink paint, which has put strain on an already fragile supply chain, resulting in global shortages.
