Best overall supplement: Magnesium helps with osteoporosis and aids in better sleep


Most people are rather dubious when it comes to supplements and their potential health benefits. Numerous studies and health experts advise, however, that if you are going to take one daily supplement let it be magnesium. Why?

If you had to nominate an MVP mineral, it would be magnesium.

Similar to potassium, sodium, and calcium, magnesium is an electrolyte, important for muscle function, cardiovascular health, and, since it’s stored in the bones, skeleton strength.

Taking magnesium supplements has been linked with having a number of benefits, including reducing inflammation, relieving constipation and lowering your blood pressure.

It has also been linked with helping those with sleep problems, as it helps your brain and body relax.

“Magnesium plays many crucial roles in the body, such as supporting muscle and nerve function and energy production,” said the Mayo Clinic.

“Low magnesium levels usually don’t cause symptoms.

“However, chronically low levels can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.”


Power of magnesium in bone regeneration for osteoporosis 

Magnesium is a mineral that not only helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, but also supports a healthy immune system and helps bones to retain their strength.

Typically, it is given to orthopaedic patients as an oral supplement.

A recent study published in Bioactive Materials looked at a new approach which replaces magnesium supplement with an injection inserted directly into the compromised bone.

According to one of the study’s authors, Kelvin Yeung, Professor in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University of Hong Kong, the team tested the hypothesis by using two different animal models.

“In one, we injected the microspheres containing the magnesium (Mg) ions.

“In the other, we injected microspheres without the Mg loading.

In the two weeks following the injections, faster bone regeneration rates were observed in the first group.”

Professor Yeung believes that one of the benefits of magnesium is that it encourages the immune system and skeletal system to work in tandem to support in situ healing.

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical processes throughout the body including energy production, blood pressure control and healthy bone development.

Magnesium is also critical for transporting calcium and potassium across cell membranes which is vital for the healthy functioning of nerves, muscles and the heart.

The supplement is also said to help improve one’s overall mood.

When stress and anxiety take over, the cells waste magnesium, which is a compounding problem because low magnesium levels make a person feel more stressed and anxious.

Hence, magnesium supplements could help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.
