The REAL.AI mod, created by the talented modder ‘Thumblesteen’, is designed to enhance the NPC AI in the PC version of Fallout 4. By recalibrating numerous engine-level subroutines within Bethesda’s Creation Engine, this mod removes the limitations placed on NPC behavior by the developers. This mod liberates NPCs from that bubble, enabling them to interact with their surroundings and engage with the world. Consequently, snipers will perform actual sniping, NPCs will flank the player effectively, and the denizens of Fallout 4 will behave more authentically, treating buildings, firing positions, and environmental elements as if they were real living beings.
According to the modder, hard limitations have been replaced with softer ones to prevent the NPCs from experiencing psychic issues, with many of them having weaker senses.
With this mod installed, NPC behavior becomes significantly more unpredictable, as they are granted greater freedom and the ability to make their own choices. For example, NPCs can now maneuver around large objects, take cover, set up ambushes, and even attempt to deceive the player. Additionally, they can blindly fire and engage targets based on limited information and assumptions.
