Paramount+’s Anson Mount (Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley), and Ethan Peck (Spock) have already impressed us enough on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. However, they take it a step further this season with a musical episode titled “Subspace Rhapsody.” This episode, written by Dana Horgan & Bill Wolkoff and directed by Dermott Downs, features 10 original songs and a special version of the series’ main title, composed by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce. The musical episode concept immediately brings to mind Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s iconic “Once More, with Feeling” episode from 2001, written and directed by Joss Whedon.
In “Once More, with Feeling,” Buffy and her friends are forced to express their true thoughts, feelings, and fears through song during a confrontation with a demon. While the crew of the Enterprise won’t be facing any demons in their musical episode, Henry Alonso Myers, co-showrunner of Strange New Worlds, shared that “Once More, with Feeling” set the standard for their episode. Myers stated in an interview with EW, “That’s one of the best-made ones. It was done very well. It’s really smart and thoughtful. It has a big heart. The only difference is that they wrote their own music, which we felt was a bit more than we could handle. But it was like challenging ourselves to be as good as the best in the genre. That was our standard.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place during Captain Christopher Pike’s command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, showcasing the adventures of Pike, Spock, and Number One before Captain Kirk’s time. The series also features Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga. Season 2 will include special guest star Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk and recurring role Carol Kane as Pelia. The crossover with Jack Quaid (Boimler) and Tawny Newsome (Mariner) from Lower Decks will be directed by Jonathan Frakes.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, and others, bring this exciting season to life.
