Chocobo GP, the Final Fantasy Racing Game, Ditches Free-to-Play and Microtransactions

Square Enix has recently made a quiet update to the Final Fantasy racing game, Chocobo GP. Players can now unlock all in-game items without spending any money, as the game no longer includes microtransactions.

The update was spotted by Nintendeal, who noticed that the game’s eShop listing now has a release date of June 15, 2023. Previously, there were two versions of the game available – the free-to-play Chocobo GP Lite and the full-priced Chocobo GP – both of which featured microtransactions.

This updated version of the game now grants players access to all timed-exclusive content, including new vehicle colors tied to specific seasons. Additionally, characters and costumes can now be unlocked through gameplay progression.

On the eShop, the new download is essentially the Chocobo GP Lite version, with an option to upgrade to the full game. Players who already downloaded the Lite version simply need to purchase the “upgrade to the full game” DLC.

In May, Square Enix announced the discontinuation of Chocobo GP Lite in all regions as of June 1. Although the Mythril currency lost its value on May 31, players who already had the game could still play and upgrade to the full version.

While it’s exciting that players who were deterred by microtransactions and free-to-play mechanics now have a reason to play Chocobo GP, Square Enix did announce in December 2022 that there would be no further major updates, such as new characters or maps, after the Season 5 update on December 21, 2022.

However, there is still a substantial amount of content in the game that may be worth exploring for those craving more Final Fantasy before the release of Final Fantasy 16.
