Closure of Subreddit Dedicated to Nintendo Switch Piracy

The most prominent Nintendo Switch emulation and piracy subreddit has been shut down by Reddit due to a sudden surge in its member count over the past six weeks. With nearly 70,000 members, this subreddit served as a leading platform for discussions about modding and pirating Nintendo Switch games, as highlighted by PC Gamer.

The exponential growth of the community, possibly fueled by the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a highly anticipated Switch game, led to a significant increase in members, from around 37,000 on May 1 to almost 70,000 before its closure. It is worth noting that PC Gamer’s coverage of the subreddit in early May may have contributed to its increased popularity.

Reddit eventually caught wind of the subreddit’s size and activity, prompting its shutdown. Despite being active for more than three years, the sudden surge in popularity drew attention from Reddit administrators. The exact involvement of Nintendo in this closure remains unknown, but the company has a reputation for taking a strict stance against unauthorized use of its intellectual property.

In a similar vein, Nintendo recently cracked down on the Wii and GameCube emulator Dolphin when their attempt to launch on Steam was swiftly shut down. A spokesperson from Nintendo stated, “Nintendo is committed to protecting the hard work and creativity of video game engineers and developers.”
