Colton Herta Left Disheartened by Devastating Decision that Thwarts Assured Victory at Road America

Colton Herta’s winless streak has now reached 20 races, as he narrowly missed out on a victory at the IndyCar Grand Prix at Road America. Despite leading for the majority of the race, Herta’s decision to pit from the lead with 15 laps to go proved to be the wrong call. This left him unable to go full throttle until the end of the race, forcing him to conserve fuel while his competitors pushed on relentlessly. As a result, Herta lost the lead and finished in fifth place, a disappointing outcome considering his pole position and evident speed.

Reflecting on the decision to pit, Herta commented, “At that point, it was unclear how the race would play out. It was difficult to predict the fuel numbers. I thought we had enough to finish the race, but it turned out we needed more.” This decision ultimately cost him the victory and left him frustrated. He added, “We had the best car and could have shown so much more if we didn’t have to constantly save fuel. It’s frustrating to not be able to fully showcase our potential.”

Herta’s last IndyCar win was in May 2022, and currently, he sits in ninth place in the standings with a fourth-place finish as his best result so far this season. Despite the consolation of earning points with a fifth-place finish in this race, Herta expressed his disappointment, saying, “At the moment, the points don’t matter to me. I wanted the win.”

It was a challenging day overall for Andretti Autosport, with Romain Grosjean experiencing multiple off-track incidents and finishing in 25th place, while Devlin DeFrancesco struggled for competitive pace and ended up in 23rd place. Kyle Kirkwood also faced difficulties, spinning on the opening lap but managing to recover and finish in ninth place.

The next IndyCar race will take place on July 3 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Stay updated with the latest breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports by subscribing to our newsletter.
