Cristiano Ronaldo makes retirement claim to Piers Morgan as Man Utd prepare response | Football | Sport

Piers Morgan has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo has recently informed him that he wants to hang up his boots when he is ‘around’ 40. The Manchester United forward took part in an explosive interview with the journalist where he criticised manager Erik ten Hag and the higher powers at his club.

Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford over the summer, with his agent Jorge Mendes actively seeking an exit for his client by holding talks with rival sides such as Chelsea. However, the player didn’t see the summer in the same light.

Reports circulated that the reason for Ronaldo’s desperation to cut short his homecoming was to play in the Champions League and thus protect his records in the competition. The Portuguese international did not deny those claims with Morgan, though did reveal that he felt Ten Hag was forcing him out the door at United.

There are few clubs financially capable of signing Ronaldo, and his age (37) will lead many to question the acquisition. Though Morgan has insisted that Ronaldo is not planning on retiring imminently, he told talkSPORT: “He said he wants to retire around 40 to me.

According to The Telegraph, the Red Devils have called an emergency meeting to discuss how they will attempt to resolve the matter.

Ten Hag, chief executive Richard Arnold and director John Murtough will all be in attendance, with Joel Glazer requesting to be kept up to date on the talks and the decision reached. It remains to be seen how United hit back at their No 7 and whether they opt to take action ahead of the Qatar World Cup or wait until the forward returns from international duty.
