Days After Game Relaunch, BGMI Esports Tournament presents Rs. 25 Lakh Prize Pool

Battlegrounds Mobile India, the immensely popular battle royale shooter known as BGMI, has made a triumphant return to iOS and Android platforms in India following a year-long ban. Krafton, the game’s developers, relaunched BGMI on May 29 with certain playtime restrictions in place. Now, just days after its second arrival in India, BGMI takes center stage in an esports tournament. Esports and gaming venture Skyesports is hosting a BGMI tournament with an enticing prize pool of Rs. 25 lakh.

The tournament, called the Skyesports Champions Series, is scheduled to begin on June 9 and run until June 18, as announced in a tweet by the esports company on Saturday. The BGMI tournament will begin at 1:00pm IST and will be streamed on the Skyesports YouTube channel. Competitive BGMI tournaments were halted when the game was banned in India in July 2022.

Back in August 2022, Skyesports CEO Shiva Nandy stated that the BGMI ban was only temporary and the game would make a comeback.

The relaunched version of BGMI introduces daily time limits to address gaming addiction concerns. The game’s latest update includes a new map set in a tropical island resort, new in-game events, and updates to classic maps. Playtimes will be restricted based on player age, with minors limited to three hours per day and adults allowed to play for up to six hours.

Last month, Krafton confirmed that the Indian government had granted permission for the return of BGMI to India, initially on a three-month trial period. The game was banned in July last year due to concerns over data privacy and online security. BGMI’s removal from both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store severely impacted the mobile esports community in the country.

“We are extremely grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). We would like to express our gratitude to our Indian gaming community for their support and patience over the past few months,” said Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India in a press release.

BGMI is now available for download on both iOS and Android platforms through the App Store and Google Play Store, respectively. However, developers have announced that playability will be rolled out in phases, with users gaining access within 48 hours.
