The topic of exclusivity has sparked intense debate during the Xbox FTC hearing. However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella envisions a future where the video game industry moves away from exclusive games altogether.
On the witness stand today, Nadella expressed his desire to eliminate console exclusives. However, he acknowledged that Microsoft must align with market leaders to remain competitive.
“If it were up to me, I would prefer to eliminate exclusives on consoles entirely. Unfortunately, it is not within my purview to define that,” Nadella stated. “As a smaller player in the console market, the dominant player has established market competition through exclusives. Therefore, that is the world in which we currently exist… a world that I do not cherish.”
“I would love to get rid of the entire sort of exclusives on consoles…
Nadella is clearly referring to Sony as the “dominant player,” which relies on AAA exclusives like God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man, and more to strengthen its PlayStation library.
Nadella also shared his general philosophy of expanding software to multiple platforms, rather than limiting it to a few. He stated, “That’s the Microsoft I grew up in, and I truly believe in that.”
Today, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick also addressed the topic of exclusives, affirming that there are no intentions to remove Call of Duty from PlayStation. Kotick believes such a move would be “detrimental” to Activision’s business.
