Hair loss treatment: Peppermint oil improves blood flow to hair follicles increasing hair

Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons and can negatively affect a person’s life as hair is often seen as a symbol of beauty. Could a certain essential oil help to avoid this process possibly helping to promote hair regrowth?

Some people have used the oil as a remedy for hair loss, said Healthline.

The site added: “This may be because the menthol in peppermint essential oil is a vasodilator, and vasodilators improve blood flow.

“In many instances (such as in female or male pattern baldness), hair loss occurs due to starved blood flow to hair follicles. Increasing circulation with a vasodilator like peppermint could potentially improve hair growth and prevent some hair loss.

“Peppermint menthol also imparts a freshened smell and tingly sensation on the skin and scalp. You can reap these benefits by adding the essential oil to your beauty products.”

In a 2014 study on mice peppermint essential oil showed great promise for hair growth.

Researchers noticed the hair grew faster and thicker and blood flow to undernourished hair follicles increased.

The study opens doors to exploring more of peppermint oil’s benefits for human hair growth.

When researchers used peppermint oil on mice, they noticed the hair grew faster and thicker, and blood flow to undernourished hair follicles increased.

Another study showed the possibility that peppermint essential oil may promote human hair growth in the same way.

However, other studies (one in 2011 and one in 2013) showed that menthol from peppermint essential oil promotes vasoconstriction rather than vasodilation.

Vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to hair follicles.

Other hair loss treatments

Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness, recommended by the NHS.

Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness, but women shouldn’t use finasteride.

However, it’s important to know these treatments don’t work for everyone and may only work for as long as they’re used.

They also aren’t available on the NHS and can be expensive.

If your hair loss is causing you distress, speak to your GP who may be able to help you get some counselling.
