HBO has officially ordered the series “The Franchise,” a superhero film franchise comedy created by Sam Mendes, Armando Iannucci, and Jon Brown.
When faced with the challenges of an unpopular franchise movie in a chaotic cinematic universe, the creators of “The Franchise,” Sam Mendes, Armando Iannucci, and Jon Brown, aim to provide answers and entertainment. This HBO series delves into the secret mayhem behind superhero filmmaking, exploring the origins of every mistake. It’s a concept that surely has Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran, and many others pondering their own experiences. Joining the talented trio on the project are Himesh Patel (“Station Eleven”) and Aya Cash (“The Boys”). Today, HBO announced the series order, with the pilot already completed before the SAG-AFTRA strike. However, production will not commence until the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have concluded.
Joining Himesh Patel’s Daniel and Aya Cash’s Anita in the upcoming series are Jessica Hynes as Steph, Billy Magnussen as Adam, Lolly Adefope as Dag, Darren Goldstein as Pat, and Isaac Powell as Bryson. Additionally, the series will feature recurring guest stars Richard E. Grant as Peter and Daniel Brühl as Eric. “Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and reality of filmmaking today, with Jon sending up the worlds we think we know. Together with Armando, they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble. I can’t wait to see more,” expressed Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & Max Comedy Series. The executive producers for Neal Street Productions include Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown, and Julie Pastor. Armando Iannucci produces for Dundee Productions, and Jon Brown and Jim Kleverweis serve as executive producers. Sam Mendes directed the pilot, which was written by series showrunner Jon Brown.
