It is important for you to ensure your child is healthy around the year. The monsoon season may tend to create more health issues for your children. In case they get drenched in the rain, they may develop fungal skin infections. It is thus suggested that you should keep up with the seasonal changes. Monsoon seasons are usually gloomy, sweaty and scorching, causing skin damage and irritation. Dr Nitika Vijayakumar Sarogi, a dermatologist at Kauvery Hospital in Bengaluru, suggests ways you can take care of your child’s skin during monsoon.
Hygiene practices: Fungal infections are common during this time. They occur due to the moisture present in the air, making your kids more susceptible to the infection caused by skin-to-skin contact and poor hygiene. It is thus advised to maintain good hygiene, keep your children’s hands, legs and feet free of moisture, and avoid sharing their towels and other personal hygiene products with someone else.
Breathable clothes: Wearing cotton clothes is common during the summer, but it is also suggested to make your kids wear loosely fitted clothes that allow air to absorb excess moisture from the skin. Avoid making them wear tightly-fitted clothes or synthetic fabric; these may also lead to irritation and skin rashes on their skin.
Hydrated: It is important to keep your children hydrated and feed them healthy fruit juices during monsoon. Give them clean drinking water, as it will help flush out toxins from their bodies; and at the same time, keep their skin moisturised.
Healthy diet: Avoid giving them street food or junk food during monsoon, as this might lead to stomach infections. Give them healthy, home-cooked food and follow a balanced diet. Allow them to practise any form of physical activity or have physical movements through games or other activities daily.
Sunscreen: One of the most important skin care practices is to apply sunscreen every day. Usually, people tend to ignore it during the winter and monsoon, but the UV rays can affect the skin of your child as well. It might also cause sunburn and other skin issues. Choose a sunscreen that is kid-friendly and apply it evenly on your child’s face, neck, hands, and legs.
It is always advisable to consult a doctor or specialist if symptoms or health issues continue to occur. The rainy season can be fun for kids, but it is important to keep them healthy and safe from diseases.
