High on Life, a popular comedy-shooter game, was initially released exclusively for the Xbox console last year. However, it has now made its way to the PlayStation as well. A recent analysis by Digital Foundry reveals that there are significant differences between the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, particularly in terms of pixel-counts.
If you have about 15 minutes to spare, you can watch Digital Foundry’s complete video analysis. Alternatively, you can continue reading for a summary of the key points.
Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of High on Life offer two visual modes: Performance (running at 60fps) and Quality (30fps). However, the presentation of these modes differs significantly. The PS5 focuses on pixel count, with Quality mode offering a full 4K resolution and Performance mode running at around native 1800p. On the other hand, both Quality and Performance modes on the Xbox Series X run at 1440p resolution, with differences mainly in visual enhancements (e.g., better lighting and ambient occlusion in Quality mode). The Xbox Series S offers similar modes but at 1080p resolution instead of 1440p. Additionally, the PS5 lacks noticeable visual quality variations between modes but experiences animation issues that were previously present in the Xbox version but were resolved through patches. The PS5 also doesn’t perform as well, with Performance mode occasionally dropping into the mid-40s fps range (while Quality mode maintains a steady 30fps). In comparison, the Xbox Series X/S versions remain stable in both modes.
Overall, it appears that the PS5 version of High on Life is less optimised than its Xbox counterparts. However, it offers a significantly sharper image. Ultimately, the choice between the two versions depends on what aspects are most important to you.
High on Life is currently available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5.
