Hyundai Motor and Kia have announced a recall of more than 91,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to fire risks. The companies are advising owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repairs have been made. The recall includes several Hyundai and Kia models, such as the Palisade, Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, Kona, Seltos, and Soul, manufactured between 2023 and 2024.

The recall was initiated due to potential damage to the electronic controllers of the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly, which can result in the pump overheating. The affected vehicles will be inspected by dealerships, and the electric oil pump controller will be replaced if necessary. Owners will be notified of the recall in late September.

While there have been six reported instances of potential thermal events related to the issue in Kia vehicles and four in Hyundai vehicles, there have been no accidents or injuries reported. The automakers have stated that the suspect part responsible for the issue was eliminated from production in March.

Hyundai has advised dealerships to provide rental vehicles to customers who do not feel safe driving their vehicles until the recall fix is available. If owners of Hyundai vehicles report a burning or melting odor, they should have their vehicles towed to the nearest dealership and avoid driving them.

In addition to the fire risk, the heat damage could potentially cause a short circuit that affects other onboard vehicle controllers, according to Hyundai.

The recall was prompted by a report in December of heat damage in a Hyundai Palisade’s electric oil pump wire harness/connector. Kia also received a report in June of melting in a Soul model.
