During the ongoing Ashes match in Edgbaston, England’s captain Ben Stokes is gaining attention for his courageous leadership, according to a report in Hindustan Times.
Former England all-rounder Kevin Pietersen believes that the current group of English pacers should not be feared, in comparison to past stars like Mitchell Johnson and Shoaib Akhtar. Pietersen specifically mentions Mark Wood as a potential game-changer, even though he is not part of the Edgbaston Test.
Pietersen made the observation while discussing Travis Head’s difficulty in dealing with short deliveries. “There’s a reason why the bowlers targeted him with short deliveries,” Pietersen said during an interaction on Sky Sports. He goes on to explain that the current English pacers lack the same pace and threat as bowlers like Mitchell Johnson and Shoaib Akhtar.
Pietersen justifies his statement by citing the case of his former teammate Jonathan Trott, who struggled when opposition bowlers targeted him with short balls. He believes that this is also an issue for Travis Head.
Looking at the scorecard, England scored 393/8 in the first innings and declared, while Australia scored 386 and were all out. England scored 273 in the second innings, leaving Australia with a target of 255 runs to win the test.
