Max Whitlock in tears after winning Olympics gold in pommel final as Irish star falls | Other | Sport
Max Whitlock is a three-time Olympic champion after winning gold in the pommel final at Tokyo 2020. The British Olympic hero was up against a stacked field of gymnasts all vying to take Whitlock’s crown.
Chih Kai Lee was the top qualifier last week and was being tipped to be Whitlock’s closest rival.
Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan had also shown excellent form to put him in contention for a medal.
Whitlock was up first, and that was seen by some as a disadvantage for the British star.
But he set the tone earlier on with a near-faultless routine which was rewarded with a high score of 15.583.
