The Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City, which was once intended to be a major attraction for foreign businesspeople, has faced numerous challenges since its inauguration in 2006. It suffered severe damage from an earthquake, Supertyphoon “Yolanda” in 2013, and Typhoon “Odette” in 2021. As a result, Cebu has been without a dedicated convention center to capitalize on the growing global meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) industry.
Fortunately, Megaworld Corp. of the Alliance Global Group (AGI) is set to announce today the launch of a new convention center project in its Mactan Newtown development. This project, led by Kevin Tan, the son of AGI’s founder Andrew, aims to fill the void left by CICC’s disrepair.
Unlike the existing meeting venues in Cebu, the new convention center will have the capacity to accommodate thousands of delegates and exhibition booths. Although the project comes with a high cost, the group is confident in its ability to recoup the investment given the projected growth of the Cebu market.
The Mactan Newtown convention facility is expected to be operational by 2025, along with other upcoming developments in the Queen City of the South.

Speaking of which…
Megaworld has also made the decision to introduce the SuperPark franchise in its growing portfolio of shopping malls nationwide. SuperPark is an international indoor activity park known for its sports-like activities aimed at older children, including basketball, football, cycling, and digital parkour. Kevin Tan discovered the concept during a family trip to Singapore and saw potential in bringing it to the Philippines in partnership with Megaworld.
The first two SuperParks will soon open in Megaworld’s shopping malls in Libis, Quezon City, and Taguig City. Tan has plans to expand the franchise to other locations, including Iloilo and future developments across the country.
