Microsoft may have ‘killed’ Windows’ answer to Chromebooks

Google’s bet on Chromebooks — relying heavily on the excellent ChromeOS — seems to have paid off handsomely. Sometime in 2019, Microsoft had spoken about Windows 10X, a lighter version of Windows which could take on ChromeOS. However, it looks like Microsoft may have dropped the idea of readying an answer to Chromebooks. A report by The Verge says that 2021 will not see the arrival of Windows 10X. Further, it says that Windows 10X may not ever come and Microsoft could include some features of Windows 10X into Windows 10.
Windows 10X was being designed as a direct competitor to ChromeOS. It reportedly would’ve had a new simple user interface, the Start menu would’ve been different among other features. Microsoft’s idea was to have a toned-down cloud-based version of Windows. However, it does look like the idea has been shelved.
It was no surprise to see Microsoft working on ChromeOS rival as Chromebooks really seem to have taken off in the last year. “Chromebooks are well and truly a mainstream computing product now,” said Brian Lynch, Canalys Research Analyst. “While the education sector still accounts for the majority of shipments, their popularity with consumers and traditional commercial customers has reached new heights over the course of the last year.”
Chromebook shipments grew as much as by 275% in Q1 of 2021. Lynch of Canalys added in a press release that “Google is now in a strong position to work with its OEM partners and the channel to cement a rosy future for Chromebooks. A substantial messaging and evangelisation push coupled with the targeting of growth trends, such as flexible work arrangements and budget-conscious SMBs, will be vital to ensure the longevity of Chromebooks’ success.”
