My Mac Studio: Unleashing Self-Expression on a Blank Canvas

Marie Kondo has often encouraged us to surround ourselves with items that spark joy. For me, that item is my Mac Studio. It’s not just because it’s fast or has convenient ports. It’s because of a small mustache sticker I found and decided to place right in the center of my Mac Studio. This quirky addition brings me immense delight, and it has made me reflect on why such small personal touches can have such a big impact.

Several years ago, when my partner and I were selling our old home, we were advised to paint everything in neutral colors to appeal to a wider range of buyers. However, we had invested so much of ourselves into the house, from the pink exterior to the murals on the walls. A realtor’s colleague warned us that potential buyers might be put off by the colorful walls and struggle to envision themselves in the space. They needed a blank canvas, he said.

This concept of a blank canvas applies to Apple’s product design as well. Their devices often feature expansive, minimalist designs with few distinguishing features. While some may find it boring, I believe this simplicity gives them more personality than tech products that are overly flashy. Design isn’t just about what’s there, but also about what isn’t.

Apple’s flat, featureless designs allow users to personalize them, whether it’s through stickers, drawings, or other creative additions. It provides a canvas for self-expression and allows individuals to truly make the device their own. This personal touch is what brings me joy when I look at my Mac Studio, adorned with the quirky mustache sticker.
