History behind National Broadcasting Day 2023
India witnessed its first radio broadcast in June 1923, initiated by the Radio Club of Bombay. On July 23, 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) became the country’s first radio company. This milestone led to the annual celebration of National Broadcasting Day in India.
After the closure of the Indian Broadcasting Company, All India Radio (AIR) was established in April 1930 as the Indian Broadcasting Service. It later underwent a rebranding and became known as All India Radio on June 8, 1936.
The Evolution of All India Radio
By the time India gained independence, six AIR radio stations were established in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, and Tiruchirapalli. AIR has since grown to a network of 262 radio stations. In addition to daily news bulletins in 90 languages and dialects, AIR broadcasts a wide range of music content, including Indian classical, film songs, band albums, and solo performances. Popular radio stations like Radio Mirchi and FM Rainbow cater to diverse listener preferences.
The Significance of National Broadcasting Day
National Broadcasting Day not only symbolizes the spread of art and culture across India but also serves as a reminder of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who initiated the Azad Hind Radio to inspire Indians to fight against British rule.
