Netflix Expands Its Password-Sharing Crackdown Outside Canada and the U.S.

Netflix has officially announced its global crackdown on password-sharing, implementing an additional fee for those who share their subscriptions with others. This new policy will be enforced in almost all regions where the streaming service is available.

However, not all regions will have the option to add a sub-account to their plan. This means that those who currently share an account with someone else will need to get their own individual subscription.

“In these markets, we have decided not to offer an extra member option. This is because we have recently reduced prices in many of these countries (such as Indonesia, Croatia, Kenya, and India) and the adoption of Netflix is still relatively low. We believe we have plenty of room for growth without creating additional complexity. However, households currently sharing Netflix will be able to transfer existing profiles to new or existing accounts,” said Netflix in a statement.

If sub-account password sharing is available in your region, Netflix will send you an email notification.

In the second quarter of this year, Netflix gained 5.9 million subscribers globally after implementing paid password sharing in over 100 countries. This indicates that instead of leading to a decrease in subscribers, the crackdown on password sharing has actually resulted in more people paying for the streaming platform.

Netflix initially rolled out the password-sharing crackdown in Canada, offering the option to add a sub-account for an additional $7.99/month to all Premium ($20.99/month) and Standard ($16.49/month) subscribers. The feature was later introduced to other parts of the world, including the United States. However, in Canada, Netflix does not seem to be strictly enforcing the crackdown, and many subscribers are still sharing their accounts with friends and family.

In other Netflix-related news, the streaming platform quietly discontinued its $9.99/month ‘Basic’ streaming plan in Canada last month.
