Netflix has revealed more about its plans to branch into games, including how the subscription service will not be charging members an additional fee to play games once Netflix begins rolling out products in earnest. Netflix also revealed that in its early stages the company will be focusing on mobile games.
In a letter to shareholders ahead of its quarterly financial earnings, Netflix dedicated a section to speak more about its new gaming venture. Last week Netflix confirmed that it hired veteran video game executive Mike Verdu to become the new vice president of game development at Netflix.
According to Netflix, the streaming company says it views “gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation, and unscripted TV.” Netflix also added that when games do launch on the platform it will “be included in members’ Netflix subscription at no additional cost similar to films and series.”
While Netflix didn’t announce any concrete titles or games, the company says that it is building on top of its earlier efforts around interactive shows like Black Mirror Bandersnatch and the many Stranger Things games Netflix has published.
“Initially, we’ll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices,” Netflix writes. “[S]ince we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.”
So there you have it. It seems, initially, that Netflix will be expanding on top of some of the interactive content the company has released before, such as interactive shows and licensed mobile games based on its hit originals. But Netflix also indicates that it views games as a long-term project and there’s likely room to grow as the company experiments with what works and what doesn’t.
