Nick Fury is Ruined by Secret Invasion: It’s Time for Him to Retire

Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated TV show, Secret Invasion, has unfortunately fallen short of expectations. While I had hoped for a positive impact on the MCU, it turns out to be one of the weakest additions to the Marvel TV lineup. The lackluster story is riddled with plot holes that could potentially harm the entire Marvel universe.

One major disappointment is the way Secret Invasion undermines the character of Nick Fury, brilliantly portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. It’s hard to ignore the fact that the once revered and formidable Fury now seems like a liability for the Avengers. At this point, it might be better for the character to retire or meet a heroic end. It’s disheartening to arrive at this conclusion, as Jackson’s portrayal of Fury has been a central pillar of the MCU.

To be fair, Secret Invasion does feature some compelling scenes between Fury and other beloved MCU characters, both new and old. Particularly noteworthy are the confrontations between Fury and Skrull Rhodey (Don Cheadle), as well as his interactions with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Additionally, the inclusion of his Skrull wife, Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard), adds depth to Fury’s character. Interestingly, we also witness the dynamic between Fury and Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), who could potentially be a more suitable Fury for the MCU.

However, these strong character moments cannot overshadow the glaring mistakes made by Fury throughout Secret Invasion. It is revealed that despite having a vast network of Skrull spies at his disposal since the mid-90s, Fury was unaware of the HYDRA infiltration of SHIELD. This plot hole raises questions about the efficiency of his spy network and his own intelligence as a leader. Moreover, Fury’s absence during events like Captain America: Civil War and the Sokovia Accords is never adequately explained, leaving fans perplexed and disappointed.

Another issue that arises is Fury’s apparent lack of awareness regarding Wakanda. Considering his meticulous tracking of global events, it seems implausible that he would be oblivious to the existence and significance of Wakanda, especially since a notorious arms dealer like Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) has knowledge of its precious vibranium. One can’t help but share Jackson’s bewilderment when he questions why Fury was not involved in the events surrounding Wakanda.

Additionally, the introduction of Fury’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Secret Invasion is a compelling angle that goes largely unexplored. The aftermath of Infinity War and Endgame deeply affected Fury, yet the show fails to delve into his mental state. Instead of addressing his trauma head-on, Fury chooses to retreat to space, cutting ties with everyone, including his wife, the Avengers, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and the Skrulls. This neglect of his responsibilities as a leader contributes to the negative consequences of the invasion, and his untreated PTSD likely influences his decision-making throughout the series.

It’s puzzling that such crucial narrative elements were not given the attention they deserved in Secret Invasion. The show missed an opportunity to thoroughly examine Fury’s journey and his road to healing. Furthermore, the trailers for The Marvels suggest that Fury has made a full recovery, indicating a lack of consistency in his character development.

One of the most questionable actions taken by Fury in Secret Invasion is the clandestine theft of the DNA of the Avengers and other beings involved in the Battle of Earth. This action raises serious ethical concerns and parallels the behavior of villains rather than that of a hero. It’s difficult to comprehend the reasoning behind Fury’s decision to collect such sensitive information.

Moreover, the show fails to address Fury’s inaction during other significant events, such as the appearance of Arishem (David Kaye) in Eternals or the emergence of a giant head from the ocean. These existential threats should have motivated Fury to return to Earth and prioritize the safety of the planet. This oversight further diminishes Fury’s credibility as a leader and exacerbates the unresolved issues in his character arc.

The absence of meaningful communication with his wife is yet another disappointing aspect of Fury’s portrayal in Secret Invasion. In a world where advanced holographic calls are commonplace, it is perplexing why Fury would choose to sever ties with his wife while working on the SABER project in space.

Lastly, the show introduces the concept of the “harvest,” where Fury willingly gives Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) access to the Avengers’ DNA without fully understanding the consequences of his actions. This decision is contradictory to Fury’s desire to handle the Skrulls without involving the Avengers, as it ultimately leads to the creation of super-powered individuals who could potentially surpass the Avengers’ abilities. The fact that G’iah (Emilia Skrull) takes center stage in saving the day further highlights Fury’s lack of control over the situation.

In conclusion, Secret Invasion falls short in delivering a compelling narrative and fails to do justice to the character of Nick Fury. Despite some standout moments between Fury and other MCU characters, the show struggles with plot holes, unresolved storylines, and inconsistent character development. It is disappointing to witness the regression and mishandling of a beloved character like Fury. Marvel Studios missed an opportunity to explore his PTSD, explain his absences during significant events, and provide meaningful explanations for his questionable actions. Ultimately, Secret Invasion leaves fans with more questions than answers, leaving us hoping for better storytelling in future MCU projects.
