Overwatch 2 Offers a Fresh Peek at Invasion PvE Missions and a Sojourn Animated Short

Next week, Blizzard will be releasing Overwatch 2: Invasion, the most significant update since last year’s relaunch of the hero shooter. To give players a taste of what’s to come, the company has unveiled a couple of new trailers showcasing PvP missions and additional story content.

As previously reported, Overwatch 2: Invasion will introduce three story missions at a price of $15. While this may seem steep, these missions will feature custom-built maps, fresh storylines, and unique challenges. In Invasion, Null Sector, the militant Omnic liberation group led by Ramattra, launches a full-scale assault on multiple fronts. However, there is likely more to the story than meets the eye. The trailers showcase a lineup of iconic and newer heroes, such as Sojourn, Lucio, Genji, Mercy, and Tracer, fighting back against the Null Sector attack. The climax appears to be an epic battle against a colossal mech boss. Watch the trailers below to witness the action for yourself.

While the value of these story missions will undoubtedly be debated, Blizzard has clearly invested considerable effort into their creation. These missions go beyond repurposed PvP maps and gameplay with a mere cutscene tacked on. Nevertheless, one can’t help but wonder about the potential of the full PvE experience promised by Overwatch 2, which was supposed to include numerous additional missions.

In addition to the teaser for the new PvE story missions, Blizzard has released an animated short featuring Sojourn. Despite supposedly laying low since Overwatch disbanded, it seems Sojourn has been conducting some unsanctioned hero work, much to the authorities’ displeasure. However, when Null Sector launches their attack, they quickly change their stance and request her assistance. It’s always interesting how priorities shift.

The cinematic is quite impressive, although as a Canadian, I can’t help but think it would have been more authentic with some actual Tim Hortons product placement. Just a small touch to add that true Canadian feel.

Overwatch 2 is available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. The Invasion season begins on August 10. What are your thoughts? Will you be purchasing the story missions, or do you find the price too steep?
