Fuecoco, along with its evolutions Crocalor and Skeledirge, made their debut in the Pokémon TCG in March 2023 with the release of the Scarlet & Violet base set.
The Pokémon TCG enters the Scarlet & Violet era, succeeding the Sword & Shield era. The Scarlet & Violet era focuses on the ninth generation of Pokémon games and the new region of Paldea. The era started with the release of the Scarlet & Violet base set on March 31st, 2023 in the United States. This set introduced significant changes to the hobby, including silver borders on the cards to match the Japanese releases. Additionally, each pack guarantees at least one holo-rare and two reverse holos. The era’s main mechanic is the lowercase ex, which features a double holographic pattern with a horizontal shine and a starry sparkle. Full Art exs now feature a green, foil outline around the Pokémon. The Secret Rare section of future expansions includes Full Arts, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares. In this spotlight on the Scarlet & Violet base set, let’s explore the Fire-type Pokémon.
Fuecoco is the Fire-type Starter Pokémon in Paldea. It evolves into Crocalor, and then further evolves into the Fire/Ghost-type Pokémon Skeledirge. Fuecoco’s Dex entries describe:
It rests on warm rocks, utilizing the heat absorbed by its square-shaped scales to generate fire energy.
Due to its small flame sac, energy constantly leaks out. This energy is emitted from the dent on top of Fuecoco’s head, flickering back and forth.
The card’s artwork is illustrated by Akira Komayama, a long-time contributor to the Pokémon TCG since Call of Legends. Some of Komoyama’s notable recent works include Galarian Zapdos V Alternate Art from Sword & Shield – Chilling Reign and Starmie V Character Super Rare featuring Misty from Sword & Shield – Astral Radiance.
Artist Kantaro depicts the evolution Crocalor, while Nagimiso showcases the power of Skeledirge through a holographic rare card.
