During the Samsung Unpacked event, attendees had the opportunity to witness the design and CMF prototypes of the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. Samsung truly delved into experimentation, testing out different aspect ratios for the Fold 5, ranging from 19.5:9 to 23:9. Additionally, they explored a variety of colors and textures for the Flip 5.
While many enthusiasts were hoping for significant improvements in the Fold 5, it appears that Samsung focused more on refining the previous model. However, this doesn’t mean that they didn’t take risks. Tech journalist Ray Wong provides a glimpse into the plethora of prototypes that Samsung considered before arriving at the final designs for the Fold 5 and Flip 5. For instance, the Fold 5 was tested with aspect ratios such as 19.5:9, 21:9, 22:9, and 23:9. They even went as far as creating 3D-printed prototypes with aspect ratios like 22.5:9 and 21.5:9.
As we now know, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 ultimately features a 23.1:9 aspect ratio for its cover screen, resulting in a squarish 21.6:18 aspect ratio for the inner display. While many users have come to appreciate this shape, there is still a portion of users who find the cover screen too narrow to comfortably type on. For those users, a wider aspect ratio like the Pixel Fold’s 17.4:9 for the cover screen, which would provide a 6:5 aspect ratio for the inner display, would have been preferred. These prototypes demonstrate that Samsung entertained similar ideas but ultimately chose to stick with a taller cover display for another generation.
Furthermore, Samsung also experimented with various Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) combinations for the Flip 5. These prototypes showcase a range of glossy and matte finishes as well as different colors. There were also design changes for the shell, such as a curvier back, although they were not implemented beyond the prototyping stage. Previous generations of the Flip featured more adventurous color options compared to the current generation.
Observing the development and evolution of products behind the scenes is always fascinating. While some decisions may not immediately make sense to consumers, the company undoubtedly had their reasons for choosing the path they did. For now, we can only fantasize about a wider Fold 5 and a more polished Flip 5.
