Not only can you currently purchase Quake 2 (along with other classic FPS games) at a low price, but there is speculation that a remastered version of id Software’s beloved classic will soon be announced. If you thought the era of remakes, remasters, and reboots was over, you’re mistaken.
The speculation stems from a report on Dealabs (via VGC). According to the leaker, who claims to have accessed some evaluation documents, an announcement about a remastered version of Quake 2 could take place at this year’s QuakeCon.
The QuakeCon event is scheduled to take place from August 10 to August 13, so news about this potential reimagining of the 1997 shooter could be just around the corner. The report from Dealabs also mentions that the project is being referred to as “enhanced” and “remastered,” and provides details about possible platforms.
Prior Suspicions
Thanks to the video game rating board in Korea, we have already been alerted to the possibility of Quake 2 making a comeback. While we still do not know if this is indeed happening, it is sure to generate excitement among fans, especially those who remember the original game.
Although Quake 2 was a massive success when it was released over twenty-five years ago, it marked a departure for the developer. It was the first game the studio created without the involvement of John Romero, and therefore did not bear his influence.
It also represented a complete shift in tone from the first Quake. The initial game had a darker, almost horror-like, gothic aesthetic, while its sequel embraced a “space marine,” sci-fi action feel, with a color palette dominated by brown and gray tones.
We hope to learn more about this potential remaster or “enhanced” version of Quake 2, but for now, it is best to temper our expectations until an official confirmation is made.
