Xbox Game Pass subscriptions worldwide will undergo a price increase starting next month. According to The Verge, Microsoft’s new prices will be visible to new subscribers starting July 6, while existing yearly subscribers will not see the changes until their membership ends. In India, the Game Pass Ultimate subscription has increased from Rs. 499 to Rs. 549, with Microsoft attributing the adjustment to reflect competitive conditions in each market. There is also a minor price increase for the console Game Pass, going from Rs. 349 to Rs. 379 monthly. Additionally, select markets will see a price hike for the Xbox Series X console, starting from August.
The report does not mention any pricing changes for PC Game Pass, indicating that its price will likely remain at Rs. 349 per month. While this will be the first time Xbox Game Pass experiences pricing changes in most regions, India had already seen significant reductions early last year across all its plans. In April, Game Pass membership codes became available for purchase at retail, including digital codes on Amazon India. These codes are slightly cheaper compared to buying from Microsoft’s official website due to the absence of additional taxes. The prices are at the maximum retail price (MRP). An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership provides access to a vast library of high-quality games on both console and PC, an EA Play membership, and Xbox Live Gold for online multiplayer.
“We’ve maintained our console prices for many years and have adjusted them to reflect the competitive conditions in each market,” said Kari Perez, head of communications for Xbox, in a statement to The Verge. From August 1, Xbox Series X prices will increase in most countries, excluding the US, Japan, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia, in order to match the price hike introduced by Sony for its PS5 consoles last year. The Series X is already considered overpriced in India, priced at Rs. 55,990, so it remains unclear if this upcoming price increase will apply there. The report also does not mention the Asian region. In most European markets, the current-gen console will cost EUR 549.99 (approximately Rs. 49,500), while in the UK, it will be listed at GBP 479.99 (approximately Rs. 50,200). The console will be priced at $649.99 in Canada (approximately Rs. 40,500) and $799.99 in Australia (approximately Rs. 36,000).
The lower-end Xbox Series S prices will remain unchanged, although it is worth noting that in India, the console already received a price hike earlier this year, now priced at Rs. 39,990. At its launch in 2020, the console was listed at Rs. 34,900. In October, Xbox Game Studios CEO Phil Spencer hinted that the current prices for Xbox consoles would not remain the same indefinitely and that changes would be coming. It appears that these changes are finally taking shape.
