The servers for the classic games Call of Duty Black Ops 1, 2, and Modern Warfare 3 have experienced a revival, much to the delight of fans who are thrilled to be able to enjoy these beloved entries in the series once again.
Despite Activision not making any official announcement about the return of the servers, players flocked to the games, resulting in a surge in player counts. According to Twitter user IdleSloth, Black Ops 1 now has 123,952 players, Black Ops 2 has seen a significant rise to 11,500 players, and Modern Warfare 3 welcomed almost 80,000 players to the scene.

This show of support for these older games is a testament to the continued demand for games from previous generations. A recent study conducted by the Video Game History Foundation and the Software Preservation Network revealed that 87 percent of classic games are currently unavailable to play anywhere, highlighting a concerning trend as the industry focuses more on the future.
While the news of the servers being brought back online spread, the reason behind Activision’s decision remains unknown. One possible explanation could be related to the ongoing Microsoft acquisition. The United States District Court for the Northern District of California recently denied the Federal Trade Commission’s injunction, leaving only the approval of the CMA in the United Kingdom as the final hurdle for Microsoft to overcome. The CMA has already expressed concerns about the acquisition’s potential impact on competition within the video games industry.
In other gaming news, Microsoft and Sony have reached an agreement regarding Call of Duty’s permanent presence on PlayStation consoles. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer tweeted, “We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.”
