The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S24 is expected to make its debut in early 2024. However, the latest rumor suggests that one important aspect of the phone will not be receiving an upgrade next year: the selfie camera.
According to a report from GalaxyClub (via SamMobile), Samsung is planning to use the same 12MP sensor for the selfie camera on the Galaxy S24 as it did for the Galaxy S23. This means that users should not expect significant improvements in selfie quality.
Consistently across all models, including the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung utilized the same 12MP selfie camera. It appears that this trend will continue in 2024.
Interestingly, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus featured a 10MP selfie camera, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra was equipped with a 40MP front camera. This pattern was also observed in the Galaxy 21 range. However, it seems that Samsung has chosen not to follow this approach for the Galaxy S24.
No Under-Display Camera Yet
The leak also dismisses the possibility of an under-display camera for the Galaxy S series for another year. Samsung has implemented this technology in its foldable devices, such as the recent Galaxy Z Fold 4, but has not incorporated it into its standard flagship phones.
As of now, under-display cameras do not match the photo and video quality offered by traditional components. According to the source, Samsung intends to minimize the size of the selfie camera cut-out on the front screen.
Although the decision to retain the same selfie camera hardware does not mean that users will not be able to capture better selfies on the Samsung Galaxy S24, any improvements will likely be made through software enhancements.
While details remain scarce, it seems that the rear cameras on the Galaxy S24 will not receive significant upgrades either. Further information will likely be revealed during the upcoming Samsung Unpacked 2023 event.
