3. Work for longer – defer your pension

You are eligible for State Pension as soon as you turn State Pension age, however you don’t have to stop working and receive your pension then.

You’ll be able to claim the new State Pension if you’re:

  • a man born on or after 6 April 1951
  • a woman born on or after 6 April 1953

If you are born before these dates, you will be able to claim the basic State Pension.

If you want to defer, you do not have to do anything, your pension will automatically be deferred until you claim it.

Deferring your State Pension could increase the payments you get when you decide to claim it.

However, keep in mind any extra payments you get from deferring could be taxed.
