Meta has recently launched a groundbreaking game for Horizon Worlds called Super Rumble, setting a new standard in the realm of social VR applications. Formerly known as Titanborne during its beta stage, Super Rumble marks the debut creation from Meta’s in-house game development studio, Ouro Interactive. This release signals a promising future for the Horizon Worlds platform, characterized by enhanced graphics and more intricate gameplay experiences. Vishal Shah, Meta’s VP of Metaverse, describes the shooter as “more than just a new world,” stating that it represents “the next generation of Horizon Worlds,” according to an interview with Janko Roettgers of Lowpass.
Roettgers remarks that all beta testers of the game were mesmerized by its remarkable visual quality. This can be attributed to the incorporation of imported objects, assets, and textures in its development—a feat previously unachievable. Shah explains that Meta reconstructed the foundational technology of the VR platform to accommodate high-quality games and allow for the importation of assets created using third-party tools. Ouro and select partners have been granted access to this import feature, enabling them to produce new Horizon Worlds games set for release in the next six months.
During his discussion with Lowpass, Shah reveals that Meta’s metaverse team has dedicated the past year to improving Horizon Worlds. He emphasizes the importance of providing users with compelling content from day one and mentions the company’s collaboration with external studios to achieve this objective. Additionally, besides refining the platform itself, the Horizon team has been diligently working on a mobile app. A previously developed version was discarded due to dissatisfaction, prompting them to start anew. Super Rumble will be among the initial titles available upon the app’s launch, and Shah confirms that it will support cross-platform play.
The introduction of a mobile app with cross-platform capabilities could enable Meta to reach a broader audience, including those who may not have the means or interest to invest in a VR headset. Reality Labs, Meta’s VR business unit, reported a $3.7 billion operating loss in the second quarter of 2023. Collectively, the division has incurred $21 billion in losses since the beginning of 2022 and had to terminate certain projects the previous year. The accessibility afforded by a mobile app may result in increased revenue for Horizon Worlds.
Shah’s team has also been working on additional enhancements for the VR platform, such as integrating generative AI tools for content creation. This initiative aims to empower more creators, even those lacking expertise in professional 3D tools, to craft new virtual worlds. Although Shah did not disclose specific release dates for the mobile app or generative AI tools during the interview with Lowpass, official announcements are expected to provide further details.
