TweetDeck has displayed indications that it will not emerge unscathed from Twitter’s extensive rebranding effort. When visiting the tool’s landing page without logging in, users will notice the new name “XPro” in the upper left corner. However, the page still features the familiar Twitter bird logo and describes TweetDeck as a powerful real-time tool for Twitter users. Furthermore, the URL remains on the Twitter.com domain.
Twitter’s rebranding to “X” was announced suddenly in July, with Elon Musk revealing the change in a tweet and later informing employees via email. The social network then began implementing changes by replacing the Twitter bird logo with a generic “X” logo, which will evolve over time. Additionally, tweets are now referred to as “posts,” and retweets as “reposts.” By the end of July, Google and Apple had updated their listings for the social network’s app to “X” in the Play Store and App Store, respectively.
The abrupt nature of the rebranding may not have surprised those who have followed Elon Musk’s career. Musk has shown a preference for the “X” branding, having previously wished to rename PayPal to X.com before his ousting as CEO. He also renamed Twitter’s parent company to X Corp. Musk believes that the new name will allow the social network to expand and become an all-in-one app with payment and banking features. However, critics have voiced doubts about the success of the rebranding, with some calling it one of Musk’s biggest missteps and a move that diminishes the company’s recognizability and value.
Despite the criticism, the rebranding of Twitter is well underway, and TweetDeck will soon shed its current name. Additionally, it will no longer be free to use in the near future, as the company plans to make it exclusively available to Blue subscribers and behind a paywall.
