These findings may not come as a surprise, given that previous reports have reached similar conclusions about Twitter. The social media platform has long had a reputation for being divisive, even before Elon Musk assumed the role of Chief Twit. It is also not unexpected to learn that controversial topics gain traction on Twitter, as this is the case with other social media platforms. Algorithms are designed to encourage engagement, prioritizing posts with a wide reach. As a result, they amplify any subject matter that generates conversation, even if it involves negative or inflammatory speech.

However, what is concerning is the significant increase in the frequency and intensity of incendiary content on Twitter since Musk became CEO. According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, reported by the New York Times, racial slurs against Black Americans appeared on Twitter an average of 1,282 times a day. Since Musk took over, this number has jumped to 3,876. Similarly, antisemitic posts have increased by over 61% within two weeks of Musk acquiring the site.

A major factor behind this increase can be attributed to Twitter’s pro-free speech approach under Elon Musk’s administration. With few or loose rules of engagement, chaos becomes inevitable. While the platform is making efforts to limit the spread of hateful content, other changes to Twitter’s functioning seem to counteract this objective. For instance, while attempts are being made to curb inflammatory speech, Twitter is simultaneously reinstating accounts that were previously suspended or banned for causing trouble.
