UAW Urges Stellantis to Increase Jeep Production at Michigan Plants

Stellantis has yet to respond to the request for comment, highlighting their lack of immediate communication skills. The Warren plant has been classified as critical due to a significant production shortfall in the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models, which are currently 17,871 units behind schedule this year.

The production gap has been attributed by UAW members to the company’s decision to lay off a shift of workers at the plant last summer, further exacerbating the issue.

In preparation for the expiration of the UAW’s current national contracts with the Detroit 3 on September 14, UAW President Shawn Fain and other union leaders are increasing the pressure on Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford. This strategic move aims to ensure favorable outcomes for their respective unions.

Fain has taken a strong stance against Stellantis, criticizing the shutdown of a Jeep factory in Belvidere, Ill., as a violation of the existing contract between the two parties.

Traditionally, automakers have stockpiled inventory of their most popular vehicles prior to the UAW contract deadline and the potential risk of strike action. However, this year, Detroit automakers are facing lean inventories due to production cuts caused by semiconductor shortages and concerted efforts to maintain high prices. Consequently, their safety nets going into the fall negotiations are comparatively thinner.

The formal contract negotiations between the Detroit 3 automakers and UAW leaders are scheduled to commence on July 13, marking a pivotal moment for the industry.
