Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) introduces the dynamic duo Varoom and Revavroom in the upcoming expansion set, Ruler of the Black Flame, set to release in Japan next week.

We are excited to unveil new information and card reveals for the upcoming Scarlet & Violet era set, Ruler of the Black Flame, in the Pokémon TCG. This highly anticipated expansion will launch in Japan on July 28th, offering 108 cards (excluding Secret Rare cards). What makes this set truly unique is the introduction of Tera Pokémon, which possess a Tera type that deviates from their standard typing. Notable examples include the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex, Fire-type Tera Eiscue ex, and Electric-type Tera Tyranitar ex. Furthermore, Ruler of the Black Flame is confirmed to be a part of the Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames English-language Pokémon TCG set, slated for release in August 2023. Expect this set to synergize with cards from Japanese ex Starter Decks and other releases throughout the year. Today, let’s explore an Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare pair from Ruler of the Black Flame.

One of the delightful aspects of the Scarlet & Violet-era sets is the inclusion of Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares, which showcase a single artist’s work across an evolutionary line. This trend originated in the first Scarlet & Violet set and has been adopted since. In Ruler of the Black Flame, renowned artist Souichirou Gunjima presents Varoom and Revavroom, with the latter receiving a Special Illustration Rare ex. Gunjima made their debut with illustrations for Indeedee, Yanmega, and Shiny Duraludon in Shining Fates, and has continued to contribute prolifically to the Pokémon TCG. You may recognize Gunjima’s work from the Eevee Character Rare and Marnie’s Pride Full Art in Sword & Shield – Brilliant Stars, Pikachu VMAX Character Super Rare from Sword & Shield – Lost Origin, or the Quaxly Illustration Rares in Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved.

Japanese sets often offer glimpses into what the English-language sets may entail, so keep an eye on our coverage for updates. Stay informed about Scarlet & Violet cards and everything related to Pokémon TCG right here at Bleeding Cool.
