A dramatic near-miss was captured on video above Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York on July 8, as two US commercial planes narrowly avoided a collision.
The incident, recorded by the North Syracuse Police Department’s dash camera, is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has not yet classified it as a “near collision.” The planes involved were PSA Airlines Flight 5511, a regional carrier for American Airlines, and Endeavor Air Flight 5421, part of Delta Connection.
PSA Airlines 5511 was arriving from Washington, while Endeavor Air 5421 was heading to New York. Both flights carried collectively 151 passengers and eight crew members, with no injuries reported.
US media reports said the cockpit alarm on American Flight 5511 sounded as Delta Flight 5421 came dangerously close. The alarm, which usually activates about 20 seconds before a possible collision, alerted the crew to the proximity of the other aircraft.

According to FAA officials, the close call occurred around 11:50 a.m. when an air traffic controller instructed PSA Airlines 5511 to go around to avoid an aircraft departing from the same runway. Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 indicated that the two aircraft came within 700-1,000 feet of each other vertically.
Despite concerns, experts have suggested that the planes were not on a direct collision course. However, air traffic control audio suggested there was a potential risk. Air traffic control cleared PSA Airlines 5511 for landing and simultaneously permitted Endeavor Air 5421 to take off from runway 28.
