York police in Ontario caution public about Caller ID spoofing fraud

The #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau of York Regional Police has released a statement cautioning citizens about the presence of fraudulent phone calls. These calls often involve fake caller ID information and individuals pretending to be government officials. You can read the official press release here.

Constable Maniva Armstrong explains, “Recently, fraudsters have been contacting victims by phone, claiming to be a Crown Attorney or judge from the Newmarket Courts. They then demand a monetary payment or financial information in order to prevent the seizure or freezing of assets.”

The press release from York Regional Police highlights that these scammers often impersonate government agencies, police services, the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA), and other legal entities.

It is important to remain cautious when receiving unfamiliar or unexpected phone calls, as the caller ID system can easily be manipulated. It cannot be relied upon for confirming the identity of the caller.

If you have been a victim of or suspect a phone call fraud, York Regional Police urges you to report the incident on their official website or call 1-866-876-5423 immediately.
