The engineering team at Mercedes-AMG keep cutting back on cylinder count. In the past few years, the manufacturer’s axed its mighty V8 and sliced off the V6 from its range. What we’re left with is a small-in-size-but-huge-in-power turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine, which finds its newest home under the hood of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe.

After the recent launch of the GLC SUV, Mercedes-Benz decided late September to reveal the power figures for its Coupe, and they’re kinda bonkers. In fact, they’re full-fledged bonkers. The smaller-output entry-level model GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, for example, is able to produce 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm, and has an additional boost of 14 horsepower through its belt-driven starter-generator at lower engine speeds. There’s also a 48-volt mild-hybrid system on board.
The alternate tuning used in the hybrid GLC 63 S E Performance sees the same inline-four-cylinder crank out 671 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque. We can thank for that the 201-hp electric motor on the rear axle, integrated with an electrically switched two-speed transmission, plus an electronically controlled limited-slip differential in the electric drive unit.

Both variants use a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission with a wet starting clutch. Standard fare includes rear-axle steering, adaptive damping, and AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive decked out with rear-biased torque distribution.
The use of turbochargers are the key, here, for such wild power numbers. The turbocharger in the GLC 63 S E Performance is significantly larger than the GLC 43’s, providing increased performance. Add in the integrated electric motor, powered by the 400-volt high-voltage hybrid system, and the 63 can burst from zero to 100 km/h in a piddly 3.5 seconds, less time than it took you to read this line.

Additional notes on the 63’s hybrid system: its high-performance 6.1-kWh battery produces 107 hp continuous power, and can nearly double to 201 peak horsepower for ten seconds. Charging comes via recuperation, or the 3.7-kW on-board charger. The difference versus traditional hybrids is this battery was engineered for quick power delivery, as opposed to longer range functionality. Basically, sprints compared to marathons.
The automaker didn’t stop there, though; there’s a double-declutching function in the “Sport” and “Sport+” drive modes that creates, according to Mercedes, a “particularly expressive shifting experience.” There are also Race Start, Comfort, Individual, and Eco drive modes.
Both variants are expected to arrive here in Canada in 2024, and pricing hasn’t yet been announced. Which of these would you consider?
