Experts state that low testosterone levels do not raise heart attack risk when hormone treatment is administered

The FDA warns that only men with low testosterone due to specific medical conditions should be prescribed testosterone. In 2014, Time magazine published an article on the rising testosterone industry, promoting the hormone as a solution for age-related declines in sexual function and energy. However, concerns about safety started to arise when a study found a higher rate of adverse cardiovascular events in men taking testosterone. As a result, the FDA required warning labels on testosterone products. But a new study now suggests that men with low testosterone who use prescription testosterone gel do not have a higher risk of heart attacks or strokes compared to those taking a placebo. Nevertheless, caution is advised and widespread use of testosterone should not be justified based on these findings. The study included men with preexisting or high risk of cardiovascular disease and symptoms of low testosterone. The results, which are to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicate that testosterone does not increase the risk of cardiovascular problems in this group. However, other safety concerns such as heart arrhythmias were observed during the study. The study authors conclude that caution must be exercised when using testosterone, particularly in men with a history of blood clots. The study was funded by testosterone manufacturers. While these results are encouraging, some experts caution that previous research has shown only modest benefits from testosterone replacement therapy. There is a concern that these findings may lead to a renewed interest in testosterone use among individuals who may not actually benefit from it. Aging is a natural part of life, and testosterone is not a magic solution to reversing the effects of time.
