Anurag Thakur highlights how OTT platforms have eliminated geographical barriers

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, highlighted the significant impact of the OTT platform during the pandemic, stating that it has successfully bridged geographical barriers. With the disappearance of boundaries in OTT, content from around the world has found acceptance among a global audience, as exemplified by the popularity of Korean content. Thakur made these remarks at an awards ceremony, emphasizing the borderless nature of “soft power.” He also acknowledged the COVID-19 lockdown for fueling the growth of the OTT industry.

Thakur further emphasized the potential for Bengal, home to eminent figures such as Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, and Ritwik Ghatak, to capture the hearts of OTT audiences globally with their unique content. He raised the question of whether regulations should be imposed on OTT content, leaving it for stakeholders to consider. Thakur emphasized the importance of family-friendly content, considering that it is consumed by a diverse audience.

The minister also highlighted the increasing popularity of mobile streaming, citing the example of more people watching IPL matches on their mobile phones compared to traditional television. This trend reinforces the growing preference for streaming platforms over traditional mediums. Thakur also celebrated the recognition of Indian content in the entertainment industry, specifically mentioning the song “Naatu Naatu” and the documentary “The Elephant Whisperers,” both of which garnered acclaim at the Academy Awards 2023. He congratulated the award recipients for their contributions to the fields of art and entertainment.

During his speech, Barun Das, MD and CEO of TV9 Network, expressed the unifying power of art, highlighting its ability to bring people together.
