Later This Year, PlayStation Introduces Project Q Handheld Game Streaming Device

Sony has unveiled its latest handheld gaming device, Project Q, at the PlayStation Showcase event held on Thursday. This device sets itself apart from others like the Steam Deck by enabling users to stream games from their PS5 console via Remote Play or Wi-Fi. Boasting an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen, Project Q positions the screen in the center and incorporates the handle parts of the DualSense controllers on either side, complete with similar buttons and analogue sticks. Essentially, it’s like having a controller with the central portion replaced by a screen. Project Q is scheduled for release later this year.

“Innovation is at the heart of PlayStation,” said Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) during the event. “This applies not only to the games you play but also to how you play them.” A press release emphasizes that Project Q can run any PS5 game at 1080p 60fps and includes all the features of a DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Rather than being a standalone gaming device like the Steam Deck or the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally, Project Q is designed as a companion for the PS5. It serves a specific purpose of allowing players to enjoy their favorite games on a smaller screen downstairs while their PS5 remains upstairs, as long as there is a solid wireless connection. Essentially, the handheld serves as a dedicated replacement for current Remote Play options on mobiles and tablets. It is worth noting that there is no information on whether the handheld can be used outdoors since PS’s Remote Play does not support connections over cellular data.

Currently, there is no confirmation about support for cloud gaming, though recent job listings suggest that this feature may be introduced later on. This announcement comes amidst rumors about a PlayStation handheld device, which also mentioned the possibility of an 8-inch touchscreen display, but PlayStation has not confirmed this yet. With the Nintendo Switch aging, more companies are looking to enter the handheld gaming market. Earlier this week, Sony launched its Backbone One mobile controller on Android, allowing users to play PlayStation games through the Remote Play app and even some native titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Mobile. It seems that the existing Remote Play app may render Project Q somewhat redundant, unless Sony has some impressive hardware configuration in store.

During the PlayStation Showcase, Ryan also revealed a pair of PlayStation wireless earbuds that aim to provide a “next-generation audio immersion” experience on the PS5, PC, and even smartphones via Bluetooth. These earbuds, set for release later this year, feature new wireless technology developed by SIE and promise lossless audio with low latency. More details will be announced in the coming months.

Both Project Q and PlayStation’s wireless earbuds are expected to launch later this year. Currently, specific pricing and hardware details have not been disclosed for either of these gadgets.
