Ghost Rider is a character with a rich and intriguing publication history. While most people are familiar with the flaming skull Rider, there was actually an original version of the character. Published by Magazine Enterprises in 1949, this version of Ghost Rider was a Western lawman who used illusions to make criminals believe he had supernatural powers. The character was created by Ray Krank and Dick Ayers, who later brought him to Marvel Comics in 1967. Despite the success of the more well-known Rider with the flaming skull, this original Ghost Rider went by other aliases like Night Rider and Phantom Rider. One of the standout issues from this early era is Ghost Rider #7, also known as A-1 Comics #51. A CGC 5.5 copy of this iconic comic is currently up for auction at Heritage Auctions. “Ghost Rider #7 (Magazine Enterprises, 1952) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white to white pages. Featuring a stunning “good girl” skull cover by Dick Ayers. Also known as A-1 Comics #51. According to Overstreet 2022, the value of this comic in FN 6.0 condition is $159. The current CGC census from March 2023 shows only 1 copy graded at 5.5, with 11 copies graded higher. This issue marks a transition in the series, incorporating horror elements to align with the 1950s horror comic trend. The stories in this issue include: “The Haunted Tomb!”, “The League of the Living Dead!”, “Tales of the Ghost Rider: The Bloody Fangs of Fear!”, and “The Murder in Wax!” spanning 36 pages in full color. The cover price is $0.10.”
