Possible revised title: The Connectivity and Ecosystem of Apple’s iPhone 16 Could Be Enhanced with Wi-Fi 7 Support

Apple is reportedly in the process of upgrading the network standard for the iPhone 16 to Wi-Fi 7. This move is aimed at enhancing support for its expanding ecosystem with the upcoming Vision Pro AR/VR headset, and Apple is making significant upgrades to ensure seamless integration with the iPhone.

While Wi-Fi 6 has been supported on iPhones for several years, Wi-Fi 7 is positioned as a major upgrade. It is claimed to be up to four times faster than both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, with peak rates reaching around 40Gbps.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst, believes that Apple’s adoption of Wi-Fi 7 will create a more conducive environment for hardware integration and provide a better overall ecosystem experience.

Considering the imminent release of the Vision Pro, it is logical for Apple to leverage the power of the iPhone at some point. Despite Apple’s emphasis on the Vision Pro being a standalone product during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) reveal, Kuo suggests that the company aims to build a more competitive ecosystem for the headset.

By offering improved data speeds, Wi-Fi 7 could enable the iPhone 16 and Vision Pro to share data and files with improved latency, more efficient response time, and reduced power consumption. Additionally, Wi-Fi 7 is better suited to support multiple devices, crucial for the Vision Pro to act as the central device connecting iPhone, Mac, and more.

Kuo also notes that this year’s iPhone 15 may see an upgrade to its Ultra Wideband chip. Upgrading from 16nm to the rumored 7nm could provide better performance and further reduce power consumption.

The Vision Pro is a groundbreaking innovation for Apple’s future. To fully leverage its ecosystem, each flagship device would benefit from meaningful connectivity to the headset. The AR/VR headset is expected to launch in early 2024 in the U.S., priced at $3,499 USD (approximately $4,700 CAD). No release date has been announced for Canada.
