Report Claims YouTube Music’s Explicit Content Popup Alert is Disrupting Playback

YouTube is actively working to protect its users from harmful and triggering content related to self-harm or suicide. However, the alert system in YouTube Music is causing issues during playback, leading to numerous complaints on social networking platforms. Both the mobile and web apps of YouTube Music are affected, according to recent user claims.

According to a report on Android Police, YouTube Music displays a content warning prompt when a song with explicit references is about to play. This prompt disrupts streaming and stops the music, as expressed by several Reddit users in a thread on the YouTube Music subreddit mentioned in the report. Listeners using Bluetooth headphones for music appear to be particularly affected.

“I used to enjoy YouTube Music until it started warning me about themes of suicide and violence. Now I have to accept the warning and it stops my playlist. This only happens with my Bluetooth headphones and not in my car for some reason,” commented Redditor u/Sherbert-Vast in the r/YouTubeMusic thread.

Irritated YouTube Music users have shared screenshots of this pop-up.

The content warning prompt states, “Viewer discretion is advised: The following content may contain suicide or self-harm topics,” and provides options to either cancel or confirm.

Playback on YouTube Music reportedly does not resume until users respond to this notification.

Complaining users have also noted that they cannot find a way to disable this pop-up alert. Even with Restricted Mode deactivated in YouTube Music settings, the warnings continue to appear.

YouTube Music, currently with around 80 million global users, has not yet addressed these user complaints.

In March, YouTube Music introduced song credits and detailed album information. A “View Song Credits” option was added to the available choices YouTube Music offers its users, such as adding songs to playlists or sharing them on social networking platforms.

YouTube Music also has plans to add a podcast-focused service to compete with Spotify. Kai Chuk, the head of podcasting at YouTube, unveiled these plans during a recent event. However, an exact timeline for the rollout of YouTube’s podcast services has not been provided.
