Internal Shakeup Leads to Split between EA Sports and EA Games

Electronic Arts is currently undergoing a significant internal reorganization, as announced today in a message from CEO Andrew Wilson. The objective of this realignment is to “empower our creative teams.”

As part of this restructuring, EA Games and EA Sports will be split. EA Games will now be known as “EA Entertainment,” indicating the company’s intention to expand beyond the gaming industry whenever possible. “We’re building the future of interactive entertainment on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences, which represents massive opportunities for growth,” Wilson stated in the news announcement.

Laura Miele, who previously served as EA’s Chief Operating Officer, will assume the role of EA President of Entertainment, Technology, and Central Development at EA Entertainment. She will work closely with well-known executives like Vince Zampella. Meanwhile, Cam Weber, who has a background in EA’s football games, will continue to lead EA Sports. Both Miele and Weber will have increased control over their respective divisions, allowing for more oversight over budgets and decision-making flexibility.

Andrew Wilson will maintain his position as EA’s CEO, overseeing both organizations. These changes align with the news of Chief Experiences Officer Chris Bruzzo’s retirement and the departure of EA Chief Financial Officer Chris Suh. Their responsibilities will be taken over by David Tinson and Stuart Canfield, respectively.

EA’s reorganization: a bold step forward

This reorganization is the latest in a series of major changes for EA. Just recently, it was announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be handed over to a third-party developer, with the current developers given opportunities to relocate within the company. It remains uncertain whether this reorganization will result in layoffs.

EA Sports will continue to oversee popular titles such as the F1 series, PGA Tour, and the newly-acquired Super Mega Baseball, in addition to their blockbuster franchises like Madden, the renamed EA Sports FC, NHL, and the upcoming College Football reboot.

EA Entertainment will encompass a wide range of studios, including Respawn, DICE, Ripple Effect, Ridgeline Games (Battlefield), Full Circle (Skate), Motive Studio (Iron Man), EA’s Seattle studio, BioWare, and the EA Originals label. The company also has a presence in mobile gaming with titles like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and the recently-released Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.

While these changes may seem dramatic, much of the existing structure will remain intact. Zampella will continue to lead Respawn and Battlefield, while Samantha Ryan will remain in charge of BioWare, Maxis, Full Circle, and Motive Studios. The main change seems to be the separation of EA Sports, which continues to be the company’s most profitable division. EA’s soccer simulations, particularly FIFA 23, have generated nearly $2 billion in net bookings.

“Over the coming months, Stuart, Laura, Cam, and David will closely collaborate with studio leaders to implement these organizational changes, embedding dedicated capabilities into franchise teams and driving operational rigor,” Wilson stated, emphasizing that “EA’s business remains strong.”

Recently, EA released Jedi Survivor, which quickly became a top-selling game with positive reviews. The company also has plans to release Immortals of Aveum, a highly anticipated FPS game by Ascendant Studios. However, its release has been delayed to add more “PC functionality,” with the new expected release date set for August 22.
